Jamshedpur, Oct 17: A 70-year-old man was beaten to death by his younger brother at Govindpur panchayat under the Seraikela Thana area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district in the wee hours on Tuesday.
The murder victim, Sadhu Purti was beaten to death as he tried to save his elderly wife from being assaulted by his assailant brother who wanted to kill her having branding her a ‘witch.’
The assailant identified as Bishu Purti, however, surrendered in the Seraikela Thana after committing the murder of his brother.
According to police, first, there was a clash between Sadhu Purti and Bishu Purti over something late in the night. Later Bishu wanted to kill her elderly sister-in-law having branding her a ‘witch.’
On seeing his wife being assaulted by his brother, Sadhu tried to save the woman by coming in between the two. Soon afterwards Bishu left the elderly woman and instead started striking Sadhu Purti with a stick and continued to hit him until he turned motionless.
According to police, soon after Sadhu was killed the information had spread across the Govindpur panchayat, leading the Mukhiya to inform the Seraikela police.
As it was an unearthly hours then, the police did not turn up at Govindpur panchayat. The police came in the morning but by then the assailant Bishu Purti had already gone over to the Seraikela Thana and surrendered there.
The police have recovered the body and shifted it to Seraikela Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
