Hathras(Uttar Pradesh): A devastating stampede at a religious event in Hathras district’s Phulrai village, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in the deaths of at least 87 people. The event, organized by self-styled guru Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Saakar Hari, drew a massive crowd that overwhelmed the venue.
Narayan Hari, who claims to have worked with the Intelligence Bureau, has a substantial following in western Uttar Pradesh. Born in Bahadur Nagari village in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district, he completed his initial studies there before allegedly beginning his career with the Intelligence Bureau. He claims to have turned towards spirituality during his tenure with the bureau, ultimately resigning in the 1990s to pursue his spiritual path full-time.
Distinct from many other gurus, Narayan Hari eschews traditional saffron attire in favor of a white suit and tie or a kurta-pyjama. During his sermons, he emphasizes that he does not keep any donations for himself, instead spending them entirely on his devotees. He identifies himself as a disciple of Hari and has garnered a sizeable following.
The tragic stampede occurred during a ‘satsang’ organized in Narayan Hari’s honor. Police reports indicate that the venue was too small to accommodate the large crowd that gathered, leading to the fatal stampede. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident, and a case will be filed against the event organizers.
This tragedy has cast a spotlight on Narayan Hari’s claims and his methods. As authorities delve deeper into the investigation, many questions arise about the safety and management of such large gatherings.
