New Delhi: A Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran has been charged by the US with plotting to assassinate American politicians, including former President Donald Trump. The arrest of Asif Merchant, 46, has led to heightened security measures for Trump and other officials.

Asif Merchant, also known as “Asif Raza Merchant,” is a Pakistani national with two wives and children in both Pakistan and Iran. His travel records indicate frequent trips to Iran, Syria, and Iraq, according to the US Justice Department.

Merchant’s plot involved multiple elements, including stealing documents, planning protests, and ultimately assassinating a politician or government official. Court papers revealed that he used code names for each part of the plan: “tee-shirt” for protests, “flannel shirt” for stealing documents, “fleece jacket” for the assassination, and “yarn-dye” for their meetings.

To gain trust, Merchant claimed he had an uncle in the “yarn-dyed” business in Pakistan, proposing a business partnership to his initial contact, who later informed authorities. Believing he had hired hitmen, Merchant was actually communicating with undercover FBI agents.

Merchant’s plan fell apart when he tried to recruit these undercover agents for the assassination attempt. He was arrested on July 12, as he prepared to leave the country.

In mid-June, Merchant met with the undercover agents in New York, outlining his plan to steal documents, organize protests, and kill a “political person.” He insisted the plot would be executed after he left the country, with the target revealed in late August or early September. Merchant even paid $5,000 in cash as an advance for the assassination services on June 21.

Law enforcement intervened, arresting Merchant before he could board his flight on July 12, just one day before the planned assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Merchant’s arrest underscores the ongoing security threats faced by high-profile politicians and the vigilance of law enforcement agencies in preventing such attacks.
