Kyiv/Moscow: Tensions along the Russia-Ukraine border have intensified as both nations report significant military activities in the Kursk region. On Tuesday, Russia’s defense ministry announced that its forces, reinforced by fresh reserves, aircraft, drone teams, and artillery, successfully thwarted an attempt by Ukrainian troops to push further into Russian territory near key settlements, including Obshchy Kolodez, Snagost, Kauchuk, and Alexeyevsky.

Despite Russia’s claims of repelling the Ukrainian advance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky countered with a significant development. In his evening address, Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces now control 74 settlements in the Kursk region, an area of strategic importance along the border. Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian forces continue to make progress despite facing fierce resistance in ongoing battles.

During a video call with military chief Oleksandr Syrsky, President Zelensky was briefed on the recent advances made by Ukrainian troops. According to Syrsky, Ukrainian forces have advanced by 1 to 3 kilometers in certain areas over the past 24 hours, securing control over more than 40 square kilometers of territory. This brings the total area under Ukrainian control in Russian territory to approximately 1,000 square kilometers.

In the United States, President Joe Biden addressed the escalating situation during a press conference in New Orleans on Tuesday. Biden acknowledged the complexity of Ukraine’s cross-border incursion, describing it as a “real dilemma” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. While Biden confirmed that his administration is in regular contact with Ukrainian officials, he refrained from divulging further details, citing the rapidly evolving nature of the conflict.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community remains on edge, closely monitoring the developments in the Kursk region, where both Russian and Ukrainian forces are locked in a tense and volatile standoff.
