Kolkata: In a shocking revelation, the parents of a 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata have alleged that their daughter was the victim of a gang rape. The Calcutta High Court, responding to these serious allegations, has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), bringing a renewed focus on the case that has gripped the nation.

The parents, in their petition to the court, pointed to the postmortem report, which they claim clearly indicates that their daughter died from strangulation and bore unmistakable signs of sexual assault. The report revealed the presence of 150 mg of semen in the victim’s body, a quantity that strongly suggests the involvement of more than one individual, reinforcing the suspicion of gang rape.

The petition also detailed the brutality of the attack, highlighting multiple injury marks on the victim’s body, including trauma to the head, injuries to both ears, and bite marks on her neck. These injuries indicate a violent struggle, and the parents allege that their daughter was likely silenced during the assault.

Before the investigation was transferred to the CBI, the state police had arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who was frequently seen at the hospital. However, the victim’s parents have expressed deep concern over the lack of action to apprehend other suspects, insisting that the evidence strongly suggests the involvement of multiple assailants.

The petition also criticized the hospital administration, particularly former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, for failing to report the death to the police immediately. The Calcutta High Court questioned why Dr. Ghosh was appointed as principal of another medical college just hours after resigning from RG Kar Medical College, where the incident occurred.

The parents further alleged that the autopsy was conducted in a rushed manner, raising concerns that it was done to shield those involved in their daughter’s death. They claim to have reliable information suggesting that at least three individuals participated in the strangulation of their daughter.

In response, the state government’s counsel argued that the inquest was conducted in the presence of a Judicial Magistrate and two female doctors, with the victim’s mother signing the inquest report. The state police have maintained that the postmortem was conducted transparently, with the entire process being videographed, and that a copy of the report was shared with the victim’s family.

Following the Calcutta High Court’s order, the CBI has taken over the investigation, with the prime suspect Sanjoy Roy now in their custody. The CBI has assembled a team, including medical and forensic experts, to delve into the case. The team has been divided into three groups: one will visit the seminar hall where the doctor’s body was found, another will seek custody of the accused, and a third will coordinate with Kolkata Police officers who were previously handling the case.
