New Delhi: In a strong message during his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the need for urgent and strict action against crimes targeting women, subtly criticizing the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal following the rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital. His remarks come amid nationwide protests and anger over the horrific incident.

Speaking from the Red Fort, PM Modi expressed his concern over the increasing atrocities against women, urging state governments to take the issue seriously. “There is public outrage over atrocities against our mothers and sisters. I feel this outrage. The country, the society, our state governments need to take this seriously,” he emphasized.

The Prime Minister highlighted the growing leadership of women in various sectors, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, and space exploration, but cautioned that societal issues persist. “Crimes against women must be probed as soon as possible. Those involved in demonic acts must face strict punishment at the earliest; this is necessary to create faith in society,” PM Modi stated, referencing the recent Kolkata case without directly naming it.

The 31-year-old doctor’s rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sparked a massive outcry, with the case now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court criticized the local police for their lack of progress and potential evidence tampering.

PM Modi also called for media and societal attention to not only focus on the crimes but also on the subsequent punishments. “When incidents of violence against women take place, there is a lot of discussion in the media. But when such perverted people get punishment, it is not seen prominently in news. Time demands that there is widespread discussion on punishments too so that criminals are scared. It is important to create this fear,” he said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, facing criticism over her government’s handling of the case, has stated that her administration will fully support the CBI investigation. However, she accused the Opposition of using the incident to “defame” Bengal. “A coordinated approach has been executed by the BJP and CPM, with support from the Centre, to defame Bengal and exploit the situation,” she said, dismissing claims that unrest in the state mirrors that of neighboring Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister’s call for decisive action highlights the growing demand for justice and safety for women across India.
