New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has introduced a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for managing patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of monkeypox. This comes in response to the global outbreak, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified as a public health emergency of international concern.
In a circular released on Tuesday, AIIMS Delhi highlighted the importance of heightened vigilance and strict infection control measures. “Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis with symptoms similar to those of smallpox, though less severe. Given the current situation, it is crucial to identify cases promptly and implement stringent protocols to prevent further transmission,” the circular stated.
Key Protocols Include:
- Screening and Identification: Patients arriving with fever, rash, or a history of contact with confirmed monkeypox cases will be immediately assessed. Key symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and a distinct maculopapular rash that can progress to vesicles and pustules.
- Isolation Measures: Suspected cases will be placed in a designated isolation area within AIIMS to minimize exposure to others. Specific beds (AB-7, Beds 33-37) have been reserved for these patients until they can be transferred to Safdarjung Hospital, the designated facility for definitive care.
- Notification to IDSP: The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) must be informed of any suspected cases, with detailed patient information, clinical findings, and contact details provided to the authorities.
- Referral Process: Suspected monkeypox patients will be referred to Safdarjung Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. A dedicated ambulance is available for patient transfer, and the emergency staff at AIIMS must coordinate with the ambulance service for safe transportation.
- Infection Control: Strict infection control practices are mandatory when handling suspected cases. Staff must use personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent the spread of the virus.
- Documentation: Accurate documentation of the patient’s details, symptoms, and referral process is essential for effective case management and communication across departments.
This SOP has been disseminated to all relevant departments at AIIMS to ensure a well-coordinated and effective response to any suspected monkeypox cases, reinforcing the institute’s commitment to public health and safety.
