New Delhi: Krishna Janmashtami, celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This year, the festival falls on August 26 (Monday). Devotees across the nation observe this auspicious day with fasting, prayers, and elaborate rituals, particularly in places closely associated with Lord Krishna’s life, such as Mathura and Vrindavan.

As devotees prepare for the celebrations, visiting Krishna temples is a key ritual. Here are five of the most popular Krishna temples in India where Janmashtami is celebrated with exceptional grandeur:

1. Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh:
Located in Lord Krishna’s birthplace, Mathura, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple is built around the prison cell where his parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, were believed to have been held captive by his uncle Kansa. This temple complex, illuminated and decorated beautifully on Janmashtami, attracts thousands of devotees. The temple is also a hub of activity during other festivals like Diwali, Basant Panchami, and Holi.

2. Krishna Temple, Guruvayur, Kerala:
Often referred to as the “Dwarka of South India,” the Krishna Temple in Guruvayur is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the country. The temple’s Janmashtami celebrations are a grand affair, featuring traditional Kerala rituals, devotional music, and a massive influx of devotees who gather to offer prayers and seek blessings.

3. Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh:
Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, is home to the famous Banke Bihari Temple. On Janmashtami, the temple becomes the focal point of celebrations, with devotees flocking to witness the deity, Banke Bihari, dressed in festive attire. Traditional devotional singing and dancing add to the temple’s vibrant atmosphere. The special mangala aarti, starting around 2 a.m. and continuing till 6 a.m., is a highlight of the day.

4. Sri Krishna Temple, Udupi, Karnataka:
The Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi is a significant pilgrimage site in southern India, renowned for housing one of the most beautiful idols of Lord Krishna. On Janmashtami, the idol is adorned with great care and devotion. Devotees offer prayers through the Navagraha Kitiki, a window with nine holes, as direct darshan of the idol is not permitted.

5. Dwarkadish Temple, Dwarka, Gujarat:
Also known as Jagat Mandir, the Dwarkadish Temple in Dwarka is believed to have been established by Lord Krishna’s great-grandson, Vajranabh, over 2,500 years ago. Situated atop a small hill, the temple is reached by climbing more than 50 steps. Janmashtami is an ideal time to visit the temple, which sees grand celebrations and a large gathering of devotees.

As Krishna Janmashtami approaches, these temples become vibrant centers of devotion and festivity, offering a unique spiritual experience for all who visit.
