Mumbai: The monsoon rains made a significant return to Mumbai on Saturday, setting the stage for a wet weekend across the city. Several parts of Mumbai recorded over 100mm of rainfall, with Magathane leading at 107mm, followed closely by Veena Nagar in Mulund at 102mm. Other areas like Eksar and LBS Marg in Kurla reported 94mm and 93mm of rainfall, respectively, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the rains are expected to continue through the weekend and into Monday, though the intensity is likely to decrease slightly. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Sunday and Monday, signaling the possibility of “heavy rainfall at isolated places.”
Sushma Nair, a scientist at the IMD, explained, “There is a low-pressure area along with an offshore trough that is contributing to the heavy rains over the city. We have issued a yellow alert, and it will be updated if necessary.”
The distribution of rainfall varied across the city, with Mumbai receiving an average of 22.09mm of rain. The western suburbs experienced more significant downpours, averaging 50.59mm, while the eastern suburbs saw 46.19mm. The IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded 13.8mm of rain, and Santacruz recorded 46.9mm between the same hours.
In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Colaba had recorded 14mm, and Santacruz received 59mm of rainfall. The consistent rain also brought down temperatures across the city, with the maximum temperature reaching 27.5 degrees Celsius in Colaba and 27.8 degrees Celsius in Santacruz.
As the yellow alert remains in effect, residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions and take necessary precautions during the expected heavy rainfall.
