New Delhi: Most banks across India will remain closed today, August 26, in observance of Janmashtami, a significant Hindu festival. However, the closure is not nationwide, as banking services will still be available in several major cities. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the holiday falls under the RBI’s recognized categories for bank closures, but its observance varies by state.
Customers are advised to check with their local branches to confirm whether they are open or closed, as bank holidays can differ from state to state. Despite the closure of physical branches, online and mobile banking services will continue to function, allowing customers to carry out various transactions digitally.
The capital, money, and commodity markets are scheduled to operate as usual on August 26, unaffected by the Janmashtami holiday.
Banks in the following cities will remain closed: Lucknow, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Jammu, and Chandigarh. This includes both public and private sector banks.
Conversely, banks will continue to operate in cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi, and in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Kerala, and Goa.
Despite the branch closures, ATM services will remain operational, ensuring that customers still have access to cash withdrawals throughout the day.
