Chandigarh: A petition has been submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking the cancellation of the screening certificate for the upcoming movie Emergency, starring BJP MP Kangana Ranaut. The film, which depicts the turbulent period of the 1975 national emergency, is set to be released on September 6.
The petition was filed by two Mohali residents, Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh, both of whom identify as baptized Sikhs and social workers. The petitioners argue that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) should revoke the certificate granted to the film. They are requesting that the film undergo a review by eminent Sikh personalities before it is allowed to be publicly exhibited.
In addition to revoking the certificate, the petition includes an alternate plea, urging the CBFC to remove scenes from the movie that allegedly target the Sikh community by projecting false and misleading facts. The petition also seeks the removal of the movie’s trailer from social media and OTT platforms until a fresh clearance is granted.
Furthermore, the petitioners demand that criminal cases be filed against the filmmakers for allegedly defaming the Sikh community through the content of Emergency. As of now, the high court has not yet taken up the petition.
The film Emergency has garnered attention for its portrayal of the controversial period in Indian history when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a national emergency, resulting in widespread political and civil unrest.
