Kolkata: Tensions escalated in Kolkata today as police clashed with members of the BJP women’s wing during a protest at the Karunamoyee metro station. The demonstration was in response to the alleged inaction by the West Bengal government following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Dramatic visuals from the scene showed protesters fleeing into the metro station as police in riot gear pursued them. The protesters, led by senior BJP leaders including Agnimitra Paul, Debasree Choudhury, and Locket Chatterjee, had intended to march to the state women’s commission office in Salt Lake. They accused the commission of partisanship in the wake of the horrific crime, which has shocked the state since the victim’s body was discovered on August 9.

However, the police intervened, chasing the protesters into the metro station and detaining them one by one. The confrontation highlighted the mounting tensions in the city as public outrage continues to grow over the handling of the case.

Earlier in the day, Bengal police also halted another rally, detaining around 20 activists who were marching towards the women’s commission office at Karunamoyee. These actions by the police have further inflamed the situation, with many accusing the state government of trying to suppress dissent.

The tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College, where the postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall, has sparked widespread outrage across the state. The BJP has been at the forefront of demanding justice, criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for their alleged inaction.

There are growing concerns about how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, was able to roam freely within the state-run hospital, allegedly arranging beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money. These allegations have raised serious questions about the security and administration at the hospital.

The criticism is not limited to the BJP and the Left; the ruling TMC’s ally, Congress, has also voiced concerns. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, remarked, “The attempt to save the accused, instead of providing justice to the victim, raises serious questions about the hospital and the local administration.”
