Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at four locations in Kolkata on Thursday, targeting properties connected to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The raids are part of an investigation into an alleged financial scam involving the institution, which also came under scrutiny following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9.

The ED’s searches covered two flats belonging to Ghosh, located in Kolkata, along with two other sites, including an office of a medical supplier and the residence of a vendor involved in supplying medicines to RG Kar Medical College. These locations are in the Laketown and Tala areas of the city.

This latest round of raids follows similar operations conducted by the ED across various locations in West Bengal, including Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly, in relation to the same case. The probe agency had recently filed a case alleging financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College, which is linked to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) ongoing investigation.

The CBI’s case, filed weeks ago, centers on financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and implicates Dr. Ghosh. The CBI’s FIR accuses Ghosh of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty, as well as violations under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. These charges carry serious consequences, as they are categorized as cognizable and non-bailable offenses.

Sandip Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until September 2023. After being transferred in October 2023, he unexpectedly returned to the institution just a month later. He held this position until the tragic incident involving the trainee doctor.

On September 2, Dr. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI in connection with a corruption case and is currently in the custody of the investigative agency as the inquiry continues.
