New Delhi: Ernst & Young (EY) India Chairperson Rajiv Memani has expressed deep regret over the company’s absence from the funeral of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old employee who died allegedly due to excessive work pressure. In a heartfelt LinkedIn post, Memani acknowledged that missing the funeral was “alien” to the company’s culture and vowed that it “will never happen again.”

Anna, who joined EY in March 2024, tragically passed away on July 20. The incident gained attention after her mother, Anita Augustine, penned an open letter to the company, accusing EY of fostering a toxic work culture and not attending her daughter’s funeral. The letter went viral, prompting a wave of criticism toward EY, with many questioning the company’s values and treatment of employees.

Memani’s Apology and Commitment to Change
In his statement, Memani expressed sadness over Anna’s death and conveyed his condolences to her family, admitting that not attending the funeral was a mistake. “I truly regret the fact that we missed being present at Anna’s funeral. This is completely alien to our culture. It has never happened before; it will never happen again,” Memani wrote.

He emphasized his commitment to ensuring a healthy workplace environment and said he would not rest until that goal was fully achieved. “The well-being of our people is my top-most priority, and I will personally champion this objective,” he added.

Probe Launched into Employee’s Death
The death of Anna Sebastian Perayil became a matter of national concern when her mother accused EY of creating an overwhelming work environment. According to her, Anna had been subjected to immense work pressure, which led to her untimely death. Augustine also lamented that no one from the company had reached out to her after the funeral, further deepening her grief.

In response to the growing outcry, the Union Labour Ministry has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Anna’s death. Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje announced that a thorough probe into the alleged unsafe and exploitative work environment at EY was underway.

The Impact of Toxic Work Culture Allegations
Rajiv Memani’s apology comes after days of backlash on social media, where many criticized the company for fostering what was described as a toxic work culture. Memani previously denied that work pressure was responsible for Anna’s death, according to a report by The Indian Express. However, the criticism intensified following the release of Augustine’s letter.

As the investigation continues, many will be watching closely to see how Ernst & Young India addresses concerns about its workplace culture and employee welfare.
