Kanpur: The second day of the India-Bangladesh Test in Kanpur was washed out due to persistent drizzle, with Bangladesh sitting at 107 for 3. The rain kept the entire ground under covers throughout the day, preventing any play from taking place.

Efforts by the ground staff, including running super soppers over the covers, were not enough to combat the damp conditions. Although the rain eased after 10 am, the significant rain from last evening and overnight had already done considerable damage to the outfield.

With little hope of resuming play, the players were sent back to their hotel around 10:20 am, and by 2 pm, the umpires officially called off the day’s play.

Rain Affects Both Days of Play

On day one, a mix of rain and bad light allowed only 33 overs of play, during which Bangladesh reached 107 for 3. India had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, which was delayed by an hour due to rain.

India Bowlers Shine on Day One

India’s decision to bowl first was an unusual move for them at home, with the last instance being against South Africa in 2015, which was also affected by rain.

Bangladesh’s openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, managed to survive the initial spells from Jasprit Bumrahand Mohammed Siraj, but Akash Deep made breakthroughs soon after, dismissing both openers to put India in a strong position.

Mominul Haque (40*) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (31) then provided stability for Bangladesh, adding 51 runs for the third wicket. However, R Ashwin ended their stand by trapping Shanto lbw. Before either team could press forward, the weather halted further progress.

As the third day approaches, both teams will be hoping for clearer skies to resume what has been a rain-interrupted Test match.
