Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has cleared a resolution passed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s cabinet, calling for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. The cabinet, which convened on Thursday, unanimously urged the Union government to reinstate J&K’s statehood in its original form.

An official spokesperson confirmed the approval, stating, “The restoration of statehood will begin a healing process, reclaiming the constitutional rights and protecting the identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

The resolution, passed under Abdullah’s leadership, emphasizes the importance of restoring statehood as a means to address long-standing issues and ensure the protection of the region’s identity. The spokesperson highlighted that the cabinet has authorized Abdullah to engage directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Government to ensure the process moves forward swiftly.

Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to hold meetings with the Prime Minister and other key Union ministers to address the restoration of statehood. This will be a significant step forward following the abrogation of Article 370, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status in 2019.

J&K Assembly Session Set for November 4

Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet has decided to summon the Union Territory’s Legislative Assembly for its first session on November 4, where LG Manoj Sinha is expected to address the House. The cabinet has advised that the draft address to the Assembly be further discussed before the session.

Omar Abdullah, who recently took the oath as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, will lead the first government of the region since its reorganization into a Union Territory. Abdullah previously served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015, when Jammu and Kashmir was a state.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) in alliance with the Congress secured a majority in the recently concluded assembly polls. The NC won 42 seats, while the Congress managed to secure only 6 seats.
