Chennai: Due to heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, authorities have declared holidays for educational institutions in various districts. Schools and colleges in Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal in Puducherry have been closed, while in districts like Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Perambalur, the holiday applies only to schools.

The Regional Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rain in districts such as Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Madurai.

Weather Update and Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted coastal districts across Tamil Nadu as a low-pressure system forms over the Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern is expected to increase rainfall intensity throughout the week, with more than 10 cm of rainfall anticipated in Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur.

The IMD’s forecast for Chennai includes scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, and mostly cloudy skies over the next two days. Since October, Chennai has recorded 43 cm of rainfall, slightly above the seasonal average.

Coastal Areas Brace for Impact

Regions along the coast, including Puducherry, Karaikal, and areas from Thiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, are expected to experience heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm, with wind speeds reaching up to 55 kmph. The IMD’s alert will remain in effect across Tamil Nadu until November 15.
