Delhi CM Atishi Announces New Timings for Government Offices Amid Severe Air Quality

Staggered office hours introduced to reduce traffic congestion and pollution as Delhi’s air quality remains in the “severe” category.

New Delhi: In response to Delhi’s worsening air quality, Chief Minister Atishi has announced staggered working hours for government offices to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution. The announcement comes as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has remained in the “severe” category for three consecutive days, prompting the implementation of GRAP Stage III restrictions.

Delhi Wakes Up to Thick Smog and Severe Air Quality

On Friday morning, Delhiites experienced dense smog and reduced visibility, with the AQI recorded at 411, falling within the “severe” range (401-500). Visibility dropped to 400 meters in areas like Safdarjung, exacerbating pollution levels. Additionally, the city recorded its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 15.6°C, slightly above the seasonal average.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has imposed Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes measures to address the hazardous air conditions.

Revised Office Timings to Combat Congestion

Chief Minister Atishi introduced new timings for government offices to curb vehicular emissions:

•Municipal Corporation of Delhi: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

•Central Government Offices: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM

•Delhi Government Offices: 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM

The initiative aims to stagger traffic flow and minimize pollution caused by transportation, a major contributor to Delhi’s poor air quality.

Restrictions Under GRAP Stage III

To tackle the severe pollution levels, the following restrictions have been imposed under GRAP Stage III:

•Ban on non-essential construction and demolition activities.

•Closure of stone crushers and mining operations in Delhi-NCR.

•Prohibition on inter-state buses except for electric, CNG, and BS-VI diesel buses.

Potential Stage IV Restrictions

If the AQI deteriorates further, Stage IV restrictions may come into effect, including:

•A complete ban on construction and demolition activities.

•Suspension of mining-related operations.

•Transition to online classes for students up to Class V.

•Daily water sprinkling on major roads.
