New Delhi: In a monumental achievement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight trial of a long-range hypersonic missile on Saturday. The test was carried out from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, situated off the coast of Odisha. This indigenous missile, capable of carrying diverse payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 km, represents a significant leap in India’s defence capabilities, serving all branches of the armed forces.

Advancing India’s Defence Technology

Developed at DRDO’s Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad, the hypersonic missile is the result of collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners. The flight trial was overseen by senior scientists and representatives from the Indian armed forces, showcasing India’s cutting-edge military innovation.

Defence Minister Hails the Milestone

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the DRDO and its partners, calling the test a historic step for India’s defence sector.

“This is a landmark moment that places India among the select nations possessing advanced hypersonic missile technology. Congratulations to Team DRDO, our armed forces, and the industry for this stupendous achievement,” Singh stated on X.

Understanding Hypersonic Missiles

Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds over five times the speed of sound, approximately 6,200 km/h (3,850 mph), maneuvering through the upper atmosphere. Unlike intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which follow a predictable ballistic trajectory, hypersonic missiles use advanced glide vehicles that enable evasion of traditional defence systems.

The combination of glide vehicles and missile technology, referred to as a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS), enhances their ability to strike with precision while avoiding detection and interception.

India’s Growing Defence Arsenal

This achievement further expands India’s advanced defence technologies portfolio. Recent DRDO successes include the guided Pinaka weapon system and man-portable air defence shields, underlining the nation’s commitment to innovation in military technology.
