NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded to a social media user’s heartfelt request for relief for the middle class, assuring him that the government values and addresses public concerns. The interaction occurred on X (formerly Twitter) after the user replied to a post shared by the minister.

Tushar Sharma, the X user, expressed admiration for the government’s efforts and urged the minister to consider providing relief to the middle class. In his post, he acknowledged the challenges faced by the government but emphasized that his request was heartfelt and genuine.

“We deeply appreciate your efforts and contributions to the country, and you have our utmost admiration. I humbly request you to consider providing some relief for the middle class. I understand the immense challenges involved, but it’s just a heartfelt request,” Mr. Sharma wrote.

Responding to his plea, Ms. Sitharaman said, “Thank you for your kind words and your understanding. I recognise and appreciate your concern. PM @narendramodi’s government is a responsive government. Listens and attends to people’s voices. Thanks once again for your understanding. Your input is valuable.”

Inflation Adds Pressure on Middle Class

The request for relief comes against the backdrop of rising inflation, a growing concern for India’s middle class. Retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance level, recorded at 6.21% last month. Food inflation rose to 10.87% from 9.24% in September, as per data from the National Statistics Office.

The government has been under increasing pressure to address these economic challenges, which have a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of citizens. Sitharaman’s assurance reflects the administration’s commitment to considering public inputs in its policy decisions.
