NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday following allegations against senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde in a “cash-for-votes” controversy. The accusations surfaced on the eve of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, with Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) chief Hitendra Thakur alleging that Tawde distributed ₹5 crore in Palghar to influence voters.

Rahul Gandhi’s Response

In a sharp critique, Rahul Gandhi questioned PM Modi’s integrity by referencing the BJP’s “Ek hai toh safe hai” slogan. He posted on X:

“Modiji, from whose ‘SAFE’ did these ₹5 crores come? Who looted the public’s money and sent you in the tempo?”

Rahul had previously criticized the same slogan, linking it to the Dharavi redevelopment project awarded to the Adani Group. In a press conference, he alleged that the slogan was a cover for facilitating Adani’s acquisition of ₹1 lakh crore worth of land.

Vinod Tawde Denies Allegations

Responding to the accusations, Vinod Tawde invited Rahul Gandhi to inspect CCTV footage from the Nalasopara hotel, claiming transparency in his actions.

“Rahul Gandhi ji, come to Nalasopara, see the CCTV footage, and prove your claims,” Tawde said, labeling the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Remarks

Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray accused the BJP of indulging in “note jihad” to influence voters.

“Is this BJP’s note jihad? Maharashtra has seen the cash bundles; it will decide tomorrow,” he remarked, calling for strict action by the Election Commission.

BJP’s Defense

The BJP has dismissed the allegations as a conspiracy by a desperate opposition. Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi defended Tawde, emphasizing his long-standing reputation.

“Let the CCTV footage speak. ₹5 crores cannot be carried unnoticed. These are baseless allegations meant to mislead voters,” Trivedi said.

The Election Commission and police have initiated an investigation, with BJP leaders expressing confidence in clearing their name.
