Mumbai: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, is heading for a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, with trends indicating its dominance. The BJP alone is leading in 125 seats out of the 149 it contested, while the Mahayuti alliance as a whole is ahead in over 200 seats. In stark contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is trailing, with leads in only 60 seats, marking a significant setback following its strong Lok Sabha performance.

BJP’s Consistent Growth

This election solidifies the BJP’s rise in Maharashtra politics. In 2014, the party contested 260 seats, winning 122. In 2019, in alliance with the undivided Shiv Sena, it contested 152 seats and secured 105. The 2024 results demonstrate a strong comeback for the BJP, particularly after its Lok Sabha debacle, where it won only nine seats compared to 23 in 2019.

Key Regional Performance

The BJP’s surge is notably prominent in the Vidarbha region, where it contested 47 seats, leveraging its appeal among both large- and small-scale farmers. The region has been a critical battleground, and the BJP’s success there underscores its strategic outreach.

Vote Bank Consolidation

Post its Lok Sabha setback, the BJP-led Mahayuti recalibrated its approach by focusing on its core OBC vote bank, which appeared alienated during the general elections. The coalition also managed to consolidate non-Muslim votes using slogans like ‘batenge toh katenge’ and ‘ek hain to safe hain.’ Additionally, the BJP successfully countered uncertainties among Maratha voters by addressing their concerns over reservations.

Women Voters: A Game-Changer

Women voters emerged as a significant factor behind the BJP’s success. The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, which offers financial aid of ₹1,500 per month to over 2.4 crore women, appears to have played a pivotal role in garnering their support.

A Significant Setback for MVA

The Congress, a key component of the MVA, failed to perform well even in its strongholds. It is leading in only six out of the 18 seats where it was considered safe, further highlighting the opposition’s struggle to counter the BJP’s strategic moves.

Looking Ahead

For the BJP, retaining Maharashtra is a significant boost as it gears up for key elections in Delhi and Bihar next year. This victory cements its political dominance and sets the tone for upcoming battles in the national political arena.
