New Delhi: The political atmosphere in Parliament turned charged on Thursday as the BJP accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of being part of a “dangerous triangle” alongside American agencies and billionaire George Soros, allegedly conspiring to destabilize India. The Congress swiftly denounced the allegations, terming them baseless and derogatory.
BJP MP Sambit Patra led the attack at a press conference, labeling Mr. Gandhi a “traitor of the highest order” for his purported connections with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), an Amsterdam-based news network, and the Open Society Foundation, funded by George Soros.
“In this triangle, George Soros, certain American agencies, and Rahul Gandhi are working together to betray India. I have no hesitation in calling him a traitor,” Mr. Patra declared. He further accused the Congress leader of aligning with OCCRP directives and claimed the organization serves the interests of its funders, including Soros.
Nishikant Dubey Escalates the Attack
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey echoed these accusations in the Lok Sabha, accusing Congress of conspiring with foreign forces out of animosity toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “George Soros routinely destabilizes economies. He was behind the Bank of England crisis in 1991 and now seeks to derail India’s economy,” Mr. Dubey alleged amidst uproar in the House.
He further demanded an investigation into Rahul Gandhi’s meetings with U.S. lawmakers, including Ilhan Omar, known critics of the Modi administration. “The Congress must clarify what transpired during these meetings with individuals who push anti-India agendas,” he added.
Congress Fights Back
The Congress vehemently rejected the allegations, condemning Mr. Dubey’s remarks as derogatory and defamatory. They accused the BJP of attempting to malign Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to distract from pressing national issues.
The chaos in the Lok Sabha following Mr. Dubey’s fiery speech led to a temporary adjournment of proceedings, as Congress MPs protested vociferously against what they termed as baseless accusations.
Political Implications
The BJP’s accusations and the Congress’s rebuttals underscore deepening tensions between the ruling party and the opposition ahead of the upcoming elections. The controversy has also reignited debates over foreign influence in Indian politics and its implications on governance.
