New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20 in Washington DC, as per an official statement from the Centre.
The statement reads, “On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-In Ceremony of President-Elect Donald J Trump.”
During his visit, Mr. Jaishankar will also engage with representatives of the incoming Trump administration and other global dignitaries.
Ceremony Details and Global Participation
Donald Trump will be administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court in front of the Capitol building. Following the oath, Trump will deliver his inaugural address. The event will also witness the presence of outgoing President Joe Biden, marking a significant moment of the transfer of power.
Several world leaders have been invited to the event, with confirmations from Argentina President Javier Milei and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has expressed his interest in attending the ceremony.
Historical Context
Donald Trump, who previously served as the 45th US President from 2017 to 2021, had declined to attend Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021 after losing the 2020 elections. The January 20 ceremony will mark his return to the presidency.
