Trump Repeats Tariff Warning Against India Despite “Very Good Relationship”

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has reiterated his criticism of India’s high tariffs, stating that while he shares a “very good relationship” with the country, he considers it one of the highest tariffing nations in the world. Trump warned that starting April 2, the US will impose reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods if the country does not lower its trade barriers.

Trump’s Comments on India’s Trade Policies

In an interview with Breitbart News, Trump acknowledged India’s importance but underscored his dissatisfaction with the country’s tariff policies.

• “I have a very good relationship with India,” Trump said. “But the only problem I have is that they are one of the highest tariffing nations in the world.”

• He emphasized that reciprocal tariffs would be implemented from April 2 unless India reduces its trade restrictions.

• He referred to India’s tariffs on American goods as a major concern, stating that India has been “very strong on tariffs” and that the US must respond in kind.

India-US Trade Relations & The IMEC Project

Speaking about the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Trump described it as a “group of wonderful nations” working together to counter unfair trade practices from other countries.

• Trump stated that “sometimes, foes treat the US better than friends”, criticizing not only India but also the European Union for its trade barriers against the US.

• Despite India being considered a strategic ally, Trump indicated that the US must ensure fair treatment in trade agreements.

India’s Response & Ongoing Trade Negotiations

India has consistently emphasized strengthening trade ties with the US while also seeking tariff reductions on both sides.

• Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal recently informed a Parliamentary panel in New Delhi that negotiations with the US are ongoing, but no trade agreement has been finalized.

• During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US last month, both sides agreed to negotiate a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) to address tariff and non-tariff barriers.

What’s Next?

With April 2 approaching, it remains to be seen whether India and the US will reach a mutually beneficial trade resolution or if Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs will escalate trade tensions between the two nations.
