Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the New Pamban Bridge, India’s first-ever vertical lift sea bridge, on April 6, 2025, coinciding with Ram Navami. The 2.05-kilometre-long engineering marvel is set to replace the old Pamban Bridge, which was decommissioned in 2022 due to corrosion concerns.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 279.63 crore by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the bridge is poised to transform connectivity between the Indian mainland and the pilgrimage destination Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu.

How the Vertical Lift Bridge Works

The New Pamban Bridge stands out for its innovative vertical lift mechanism, which allows a central span to rise 22 meters vertically, enabling ships and marine vessels to pass through the Palk Strait without obstruction.

Unlike traditional swing or drawbridges, the vertical lift design uses a sophisticated electro-mechanical system that lifts the span within five minutes, ensuring minimal disruption to rail traffic.

The structure operates on counterweights and sheaves, which help manage the heavy central span safely and efficiently. The design is robust enough to support double-track rail lines and high-speed trains, aligning with modern railway standards.

Bridge Features and Timeline

• Length: 2.05 km

• Lift Height: 22 meters

• Construction Cost: ₹279.63 crore

• Builder: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL)

• Project Start: November 2019

• Trial Runs: Late 2024

• Inauguration: April 6, 2025

Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project steadily advanced, and its completion now marks a milestone in India’s railway infrastructure.

The old Pamban Bridge, a vital link since 1914, was shut down in 2022 due to corrosion. Its replacement not only ensures continued rail access to Rameswaram but also introduces state-of-the-art engineering that improves both rail and marine transport.

As the inauguration nears, the bridge is being hailed as a symbol of innovation, connectivity, and progressive infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu.
