New Delhi: The Department of Commerce on Thursday stated it is thoroughly examining the implications of the newly announced reciprocal tariffs by the United States on Indian goods. The Ministry emphasized that consultations are ongoing with industry representatives, domestic exporters, and other relevant stakeholders to assess the impact of these tariffs.

US President Donald Trump announced ad-valorem duties ranging from 10% to 50% on imports from all trading partners, effective from April 5. While the baseline tariff will start at 10%, India faces a specific tariff rate of 26% starting April 9. Notably, sectors such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and energy products are exempt from these tariffs.

“The Department of Commerce is carefully examining the implications of various measures and announcements made by the President of the USA,” the ministry said in its official statement.

Additionally, the Ministry highlighted ongoing negotiations between Indian and US trade teams aimed at expediting a comprehensive, multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The proposed BTA would address several issues of mutual interest, including deepening supply chain integration and fostering increased trade, investment, and technological exchange between both nations.

“We remain actively engaged with the Trump Administration to further these discussions and expect meaningful progress in the days ahead,” the ministry stated.

The statement reaffirmed India’s commitment to its Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the US, emphasizing mutual benefits and close collaboration for the prosperity of citizens in both countries.
