New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comments during his recent address at Boston University, where he criticized the Election Commission of India and the Modi government over the Maharashtra elections, have drawn sharp backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking to Indian-origin students, Gandhi questioned the sudden addition of 65 lakh voters within two hours during elections in Maharashtra.

Reacting strongly, BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of deliberately maligning India’s constitutional institutions on foreign soil. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra slammed Gandhi at a press conference, saying, “Rahul Gandhi has made it a habit to insult India abroad. When he fails to gain the trust of Indian voters, he chooses international platforms to attack Indian democracy.”

Patra also reminded that Rahul and Sonia Gandhi’s names have been mentioned in the Enforcement Directorate’s chargesheet and that they might face imprisonment for alleged corruption. “The Congress party is constantly trying to create unrest across the country,” he said.

Another BJP leader, Shehzad Poonawalla, accused Rahul of taking a “contract to defame India internationally.” He added, “While the world praises the transparency and credibility of India’s Election Commission, Rahul Gandhi and his ecosystem are busy spreading baseless lies.”

Poonawalla further stated, “Whenever Congress wins an election, there’s no issue with the Election Commission. But the moment they lose, they blame the commission.”

The controversy stems from Rahul Gandhi’s remarks during his speech in the US, where he alleged fundamental flaws in India’s system. Referring to the Maharashtra elections, he claimed that 6.5 million voters were added to the rolls within two hours — a figure he deemed suspicious and questioned its feasibility.
