Bengaluru: Heavy rains since May 18 have brought several areas of Bengaluru to a standstill, with waterlogging, open drains, and slow official response adding to residents’ frustrations. Localities like Whitefield, Thubarahalli, and Amaranthe have reported submerged homes, disrupted movement, and public health risks—just weeks before the monsoon sets in fully.

Whitefield neighbourhood submerged, residents evacuated

In Sri Sai Layout, Whitefield, resident Neelufur described the flooding as the worst in years. “Only 10% of the water has been pumped out. It will take a week to clear. This time the entire Vaddarapalya is affected,” she said. Despite a visit from BBMP officials and a video call with the Chief Minister, she expressed doubt about follow-through. “They always wait for summer to do repairs. Every year we get promises—this year is no different,” she added. Neelufur had to evacuate her flooded home while her father remains in the ICU. She also suffered injuries after falling into an open manhole left exposed during water drainage operations.

Construction mismanagement worsens flooding in Amaranthe

In Amaranthe, residents reported that a builder diverted water from an elevated construction site into a nearby empty plot, triggering severe flooding. BBMP officials and traffic police responded after complaints, ordering the contractor to clear debris and redirect water to the original site. “The road has now been levelled with mud for basic passage, but the blame game has started on who will fix it permanently,” a resident said.

Thubarahalli sees quick response but recurring issues

In Sonestaa Silver Oak, Thubarahalli, flooding has become routine. Resident Sharath said, “This time civic workers responded quickly. They diverted water and cleared roads by morning, but the root problem still persists every year.”
