Kolkata: A shocking irony has emerged in the brutal rape case at a city law college, as a year-old video of the main accused, Monojit Mishra, has gone viral. In the video, Mishra is seen vociferously demanding the death penalty for the culprit in the R.G. Kar Hospital rape-murder case, leading to widespread public outrage over the hypocrisy.
A History of Crime and Campus Influence
Monojit Mishra, an alumnus and former contractual staff member of the law college, is now in police custody along with two other students, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Jaib Ahmed. It has come to light that Mishra is a history-sheeter with multiple prior police complaints against him, including for molestation, assault, and theft, though he was out on bail. Students allege that Mishra, a former leader of the Trinamool’s campus unit, claimed proximity to top party leaders and used this influence to create an atmosphere of fear among students and teachers alike. While the Trinamool has now distanced itself from him, his past actions have raised serious questions about the culture of impunity.
Political Backlash as Investigation Continues
The viral video, where Mishra had written “we demand noose for the rapist,” has put the state’s Trinamool government in a difficult position, with the opposition seizing the opportunity to critique the law and order situation. In response to the incident, all three accused have been expelled from the college and are currently in police custody. They were scheduled to be produced in court today. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into Mishra’s long history of alleged offenses and his deep-rooted influence on campus.
