Kolkata: Following the arrest of Monojit Mishra for the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student, a horrifying picture is emerging of a sustained “reign of terror” he reportedly maintained at the South Calcutta Law College. As more students find the courage to speak out, they describe years of unchecked harassment, intimidation, and assault, which they claim went unpunished due to his political connections and the climate of fear he cultivated.

A Campus Gripped by Fear

Students, many speaking anonymously, have revealed that women on campus would often skip classes just to avoid any interaction with Mishra. They allege a pattern of gross misconduct, including clicking photos of female students, morphing them, and circulating them on WhatsApp groups to intimidate and shame them. There are multiple accounts of prior sexual harassment and physical assault. One student recounted how Mishra allegedly assaulted a woman in 2019, tearing her clothes, and beat up a security guard in May 2024. Despite numerous FIRs being filed against him over the years for these and other offenses, students claim no meaningful action was ever taken because he was “politically safeguarded.”

Premeditated Crime and a History of Blackmail

The official police investigation appears to corroborate the students’ claims of a long-standing pattern of abuse. A nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) is now handling the case, and police have stated the crime was “premeditated,” with the victim being targeted from her first day at the college.Shockingly, investigators have also found that the accused trio—Mishra, Pramit Mukhopadhyay, and Jaib Ahmed—had a history of sexually harassing female students and recording the acts to blackmail them into silence. The college has since expelled the two students and terminated Mishra’s employment.
