New Delhi/Ranchi: The Supreme Court has ordered DHFL promoter Dheeraj Wadhawan to surrender within two weeks in connection with a massive ₹34,000 crore bank fraud case. The apex court also cancelled the bail earlier granted by the Delhi High Court on medical grounds, following a hearing on a petition filed by the CBI.
Delhi High Court Had Granted Bail on Health Grounds
In November 2024, the Delhi High Court had granted Dheeraj Wadhawan bail citing his health condition. However, the CBI challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, arguing that Wadhawan’s medical state was not severe enough to warrant bail. The agency highlighted his central role in a large-scale banking scam.
Medical Board Finds No Serious Illness
The Supreme Court ordered a medical examination by doctors at JJ Hospital, Mumbai. Based on the board’s report, which confirmed that Wadhawan did not suffer from any life-threatening condition requiring immediate external treatment, the Court cancelled his bail and instructed him to surrender within two weeks.
The ₹34,000 Crore Scam Explained
According to the CBI, Wadhawan created over 2.6 lakh fake home loan accounts to fraudulently obtain loans from a consortium of 17 banks totaling ₹34,000 crore. The funds were then diverted using a network of shell companies for personal and unauthorized use. The CBI registered the case in 2001 and has since been investigating the complex financial web.
