New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed chaos on Friday over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, with opposition members boycotting proceedings, shouting slogans, and throwing paper pieces towards the Speaker’s chair. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly objected to the behaviour, calling it an insult to the dignity of the House.
Rijiju Urges Opposition to Join Debate
Rijiju said that all MPs elected from across India have the right to raise their constituents’ issues and accused the opposition of repeatedly disrupting the session since it began. “We have taken an oath to serve in this House. Throwing papers at the Chair lowers its dignity. If you have courage, participate in the discussion instead of wasting time,” he said, adding that bills scheduled for review will proceed to the relevant committees regardless of protests.
Accusations Against Congress Leadership
BJP MP Jagdambika Pal alleged that Congress deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi instigated MPs to tear papers and throw them towards the Speaker. “This is the first time I’ve seen a deputy leader direct members to engage in such irresponsible behaviour,” Pal said.
The proceedings of the House have been adjourned until August 18.
