Guwahati: Sandipan Garg, a deputy superintendent in the Assam Police Service and cousin of late singer Zubeen Garg, has been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the singer’s mysterious drowning during a yacht party in Singapore. He is the fifth person taken into custody in the case, which has been registered under charges of murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.

Arrest After Five Days Of Interrogation

Sandipan Garg was produced in a local court on Tuesday and sent to seven-day police custody after the SIT requested 14 days. He had travelled with Zubeen to Singapore for the North East India Festival, marking his first foreign trip, and was present at the yacht party where the 52-year-old singer died on September 1. Sandipan had also brought some of Zubeen’s belongings back to India.

Officials confirmed that he was arrested following five days of questioning. Asked about his suspension status, Assam CID Special DGP Munna Gupta, who is heading the SIT, said that his arrest was made today and further departmental action will follow.

Multiple Arrests Linked To Yacht Party

Earlier, on October 2, Zubeen’s bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta were arrested. Both were present at the party — with Goswami seen swimming near the singer and Mahanta recording the moment on her mobile.

A day earlier, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested on charges of culpable homicide and conspiracy.

The SIT is probing whether there was foul play in Zubeen Garg’s death, which initially appeared to be accidental drowning.
