Chandigarh: Former Punjab minister Razia Sultana and her husband, ex-Director General of Police Mohammed Mustafa, have been booked for the alleged murder of their son Aqil Akhtar, who was found dead at his Panchkula residence last week. The 33-year-old’s mysterious death has triggered sensational revelations, including videos in which he accused his father of having an affair with his wife — allegations he later retracted.
Videos Reveal Disturbing Claims and Family Discord
In a video recorded in August, Aqil alleged that his father and his wife were having an affair and that his family planned to frame or kill him. “My wife didn’t marry me, she married my father,” he claimed, adding that his mother and sister were also part of a conspiracy. Aqil said his family branded him “mentally unstable” to discredit him and confined him to a rehabilitation centre against his will. In a later clip, however, Aqil appeared to retract his earlier statements, saying he had been suffering from schizophrenia and misunderstood his family’s actions.
Police File Murder Case After Complaint
Panchkula Police initially did not suspect foul play, attributing Aqil’s death to possible drug overdose or medicine reaction. However, a complaint filed by Shamsuddin, a family acquaintance, and the surfacing of Aqil’s videos prompted authorities to register a case against his parents, wife, and sister. Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Guptaconfirmed that an FIR was filed after reviewing the videos and social media evidence. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now been formed to probe the case.
Political and Family Background
Razia Sultana, a former Congress MLA from Malerkotla, served as a cabinet minister in the Punjab government between 2017 and 2022. Her husband, Mohammed Mustafa, is a retired senior IPS officer and a known political figure in Punjab. Aqil, who had a law background, was reportedly under immense psychological stress in the months leading to his death.
