New Delhi: The Congress launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his Bihar election rallies, accusing him of making false promises and neglecting the Seemanchal and Bhagalpur regions. Party spokesperson and MP Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X to mock the Prime Minister, saying, “The Prime Minister’s lies are the strongest.”
Unfulfilled Promises Haunt PM Modi in Bihar
Ramesh reminded voters of Modi’s past commitments, including the 2015 promise to establish Vikramshila Central University in Bhagalpur on 500 acres with an investment of ₹500 crore. “Ten years later, not a single brick has been laid. Has Vikramshila also vanished along with the ₹1.25 lakh crore package?” he asked.
He also cited Modi’s 2014 claim in Motihari that he would drink tea made from the sugar of the revived local sugar mill during his next visit — a promise unfulfilled even after 11 years. Ramesh further mentioned the 2020 announcement of ₹1,264 crore for AIIMS Darbhanga, noting that “neither the building nor the hospital has been constructed yet,” despite the Prime Minister claiming in 2023 that the facility was operational.
Seemanchal Still Struggling with Poverty and Neglect
Highlighting the backwardness of Seemanchal, Ramesh said that the NITI Aayog report shows over half the population in districts like Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj, and Katihar live in multi-dimensional poverty. He accused the BJP-JD(U) government of neglecting the region for two decades, resulting in mass poverty and underdevelopment.
He cited findings from the Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI), stating that 73% of households lack access to tap or handpump water, 33% practice open defecation, and 65% rely on firewood for cooking — increasing respiratory risks. “Eighty-four per cent of families suffer from severe poverty, most depend on agriculture, and over 40% are landless,” Ramesh said, accusing the government of deliberately keeping Seemanchal backward.
Congress Promises a People’s Response
“The people of Seemanchal and Bhagalpur will answer with their votes,” Ramesh declared, asserting that the Congress will continue exposing false promises and fighting for development. Meanwhile, during his rally in Araria, PM Modisaid, “I have come not as a Prime Minister, but as your son.”
