Ranchi: The Jharkhand government launched its paddy procurement drive on Monday, recording the purchase of 18,786.09 quintals of paddy on the very first day, as the state targets a total procurement of 60 lakh quintals this season.
State Sets Ambitious Procurement Target
The government has fixed a procurement target of 60 lakh quintals of paddy for the current season. A total of 2,51,182 farmers have registered under the scheme so far, and 3,366 farmers have already received SMS notifications regarding the sale of their produce.
Higher MSP to Encourage Farmers
This year, paddy is being procured at a rate of ₹2,450 per quintal, an increase from ₹2,400 per quintal last year. Across the state, 801 paddy procurement centres have been set up to facilitate smooth purchases. The higher price is expected to boost farmer participation.
Past Performance Highlights Challenges
In the previous three years, the state struggled to meet its procurement targets. During 2022–23 and 2023–24, drought conditions and farmer reluctance significantly impacted procurement, with only about 29 percent of the target achieved each year. In 2024–25, procurement improved to 40.8 lakh quintals, about 67 percent of the target, showing partial recovery.
