Scotland began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a dominating 73-run win over debutant Italy at Eden Gardens. In Group-C’s third match on Monday, Italy chose to bowl first after winning the toss but failed to contain the Scottish batters.
Scotland Posts Record-Breaking Total
Batting first, Scotland posted a massive 207/4 in 20 overs. George Munsey smashed 84 off 54 balls, supported by Brandon McMullen’s unbeaten 41. Michael Leask delivered an explosive finish with 22 runs off just 5 balls. He also took 4 wickets and was named Player of the Match. Italy’s bowlers—Grant Stewart, Ali Hassan, Thomas Draca, and JJ Smuts—each took one wicket.
Italy’s Chase Falters Despite Fightback
Chasing 208, Italy could only manage 134/9 in 17.4 overs. They lost both openers early, with Michael Leask striking on the very first ball. JJ Smuts also fell in the fourth over. Ben Manenti offered some resistance with a 52-run knock, supported by his brother Harry Manenti’s 37, forming a 73-run partnership. However, the rest of the lineup failed to deliver. Scotland’s Mark Watt took 2 wickets, while Brad Currie, Brad Wheal, and Oliver Davidson claimed one each.
Scotland Creates New Associate Record
Scotland’s 207/4 is now the highest T20 World Cup total by an Associate nation, surpassing USA’s 197/3 set in 2024. Other high totals include Canada (194/5), Netherlands (193/4), and Ireland (189/4).
