Kolkata: Panic gripped Kolkata after tremors from a 4.9-magnitude earthquake, which first struck Bangladesh, were felt across the city. Residents rushed out of homes, offices, and schools as buildings shook briefly.
Tremors Trigger Evacuations Across City
The earthquake led to precautionary evacuations, with many people gathering in open areas outside apartment complexes and commercial buildings. Social media was flooded with screenshots of earthquake alerts received on mobile phones.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who was addressing a public gathering at the time, paused his speech as tremors were felt at the venue.
Residents Share Experiences
Several residents described mild shaking inside buildings. A 63-year-old woman said her rocking chair began swaying and even a switched-off ceiling fan appeared to move. While she estimated the shaking lasted around five minutes, officials indicated that the tremors continued only for a few seconds, with objects possibly moving due to residual momentum.
Kolkata, known for its densely packed old structures, witnessed heightened anxiety, though no immediate reports of major damage or casualties were confirmed.
