Kolkata: Ram Navami processions organised by the BJP across West Bengal have sparked a political controversy, with the party projecting “Ram Rajya” as an electoral vision while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused it of turning the religious occasion into a campaign tool.

BJP Pushes Ram Rajya Narrative During Processions

The BJP conducted large processions in Kolkata and several other cities on the occasion of Ram Navami. Leader of Opposition and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari led a rally in Bhabanipur, stating that establishing Ram Rajya in West Bengal is essential. He asserted that the party has taken to the streets to promote this vision ahead of the elections.

Mamata Banerjee Alleges Political Misuse Of Festival

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended greetings on Ram Navami but strongly criticised the BJP, alleging that the festival has been used as a political campaign. In a social media post, she said that the celebration of Lord Ram’s birth anniversary has effectively become a tool for vote mobilisation by the saffron camp.

Tension After Police Halt Weapon Display In Rally

Tension flared in New Town when police stopped a BJP procession after participants were seen carrying swords. Bidhannagar and New Town police stated that processions with weapons are not permitted. BJP candidate from Rajarhat-New Town, Piyush Kanodia, attempted to persuade authorities to allow the rally to continue, but police initially refused.

Situation Eases, Rally Allowed To Proceed Later

After discussions and normalization of the situation, the police eventually allowed the procession to move forward. The incident underscores rising political sensitivity in the state, where religious events are increasingly intersecting with electoral campaigning.
