New Delhi: Severe weather conditions including storms, heavy rainfall, snowfall, and lightning have disrupted normal life across multiple states, leaving at least 15 people dead in Uttar Pradesh and stranding around 1,500 tourists in Sikkim due to a landslide.

Snowfall, Landslides and Widespread Damage

The impact of a western disturbance has triggered snowfall in parts of Uttarakhand, including Yamunotri, while several districts reported rain and hailstorms. In Sikkim’s Mangan district, heavy rain and snowfall caused a landslide on the Lachen–Chungthang road, blocking movement and leaving tourists stranded. Rescue operations are currently underway.

Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude regions such as Lahaul-Spiti witnessed significant snowfall, with areas like Gondla and Keylong recording substantial accumulation. Hailstorms in Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi have also caused damage to apple crops.

Lightning and Storms Claim Lives, Alerts Across States

In Uttar Pradesh, thunderstorms and lightning over the past 72 hours have claimed 15 lives, with several districts including Varanasi, Kanpur, and Mathura affected by intermittent rain and hail. Alerts for strong winds and heavy rain have also been issued in Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, and Haryana.

Weather warnings have been extended to multiple states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, and southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as further storms, rainfall, and lightning are expected in the coming days.
