New Delhi: The President of India, exercising powers under Article 124(2) of the Constitution, has appointed five judges to the Supreme Court, including Justice Chandrashekhara, former judge of the Jharkhand High Court and current Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Five New Appointments to the Apex Court

The other four judges appointed alongside Justice Chandrashekhara are Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; Justice Arun Palli of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court; and Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, who has been elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court.

Appointments Follow Collegium Recommendations

The Supreme Court Collegium had held meetings on May 22 and May 27, during which it recommended the appointment of five judges to the central government. The President’s approval formalises those recommendations, bringing a blend of judicial experience, administrative expertise, and legal specialisation to the apex court.

Direct Bar Elevation Strengthens Representation

The appointment of Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court is particularly notable, as such direct elevations are relatively rare and are seen as strengthening the diversity of representation on the bench. The remaining four appointees bring extensive experience from their respective high courts across different regions of the country.
