New Delhi: A two-day meeting of National Security Advisors and senior security representatives of BRICS member nations began in New Delhi on Monday under India’s chairmanship, with NSA Ajit Doval presiding over the conference focused on non-traditional security challenges facing the world today.

Key Attendees

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, the Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and heads of delegations from other BRICS member nations are attending the meeting. Sources indicate that Wang Yi will also hold a separate bilateral meeting with NSA Doval on the sidelines.

Agenda and Key Issues

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting will review the findings of recent sessions of the Counter-Terrorism Joint Working Group and the Security Working Group on safe use of information and communication technology. Discussions are expected to cover cross-border terrorism, the West Asia crisis, the Russia-Ukraine war, and other sensitive regional security issues. The meeting will also focus on strengthening cooperation among BRICS nations against terrorism, cyber threats, and other security challenges.

Significance for BRICS Summit

The meeting is being seen as an important preparatory step ahead of the BRICS Summit proposed to be held in India in September.
