New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, currently on a visit to Russia, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Supreme Court of Russia to strengthen judicial cooperation between the two countries. CJI Surya Kant and Russian Supreme Court Chairman Igor Krasnov signed the agreement in Moscow, marking the first ever MoU between the apex courts of India and Russia.

Key Areas Covered Under the MoU

Under the agreement, the judicial institutions of both countries will cooperate across several areas including the use of information technology in justice delivery, exchange of judicial experiences, and training of judicial officers.

CJI Highlights Similarities in Both Judicial Systems

Following the signing, CJI Surya Kant expressed that administering justice in large countries like India and Russia is a significant responsibility. He highlighted the similarities between the judicial systems of both nations and expressed confidence that sustained dialogue and cooperation between the two Supreme Courts will further strengthen their judicial institutions.

AI and Digitisation in Focus

The occasion also saw discussions on the use of technology and particularly Artificial Intelligence in the justice system. CJI Surya Kant said India’s court digitisation initiative aims to make access to justice easier and more effective, but should not alter the fundamental principles of justice. He noted that Indian judiciary is continuously expanding facilities including e-filing, online hearings, digitisation of records, AI-based translation, and virtual judicial assistance.
