Ranchi: A 55-year-old patient underwent a successful high-risk open heart surgery at RIMS, with the entire treatment provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme; the patient, a resident of Hazaribagh, had been suffering for several months from high fever, breathlessness, rapid heartbeat and swelling in the legs.

Severely Damaged Aortic Valve Led to Heart Failure

Examinations revealed that the patient’s aortic valve had been severely damaged, putting him at risk of heart failure, while his kidneys and liver were also not functioning properly. Doctors said the patient’s heart was operating at just 20 percent capacity, with fluid accumulation also detected around the heart and lungs.

Emergency Surgery Performed After Stabilisation

Given the patient’s critical condition, he was first placed on high-flow oxygen support before doctors decided to proceed immediately with open heart surgery based on diagnostic findings. Necessary surgical materials were made available through RIMS’s Amrit Pharmacy under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, following which the damaged aortic valve was removed and replaced with an artificial valve.

Patient’s Condition Stable, Organ Function Improving

According to RIMS, the patient’s condition remained stable after the surgery, with significant improvement observed in the functioning of his heart, kidneys, liver and lungs. The removed valve has been sent for further examination to determine the exact cause of the condition.

Surgery Led by Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary Under CTVS Department Guidance

The high-risk open heart surgery was performed under the guidance of CTVS department head Prof. Dr. Pankaj Bodra, led by Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary, with support from the cardiac anaesthesia team and other doctors, nurses and healthcare staff who played a crucial role in the procedure.
