Ranchi: Obtaining a water connection in Jharkhand’s urban areas could soon become more expensive, with municipal bodies across the state considering a 15 to 20 percent increase in water connection fees, following the submission of three-year review reports by 30 urban local bodies to the Urban Development and Housing Department.
Preliminary Study Points to 15-20% Fee Increase
Based on an initial study of the reports received, the department is estimating a 15 to 20 percent increase in water connection charges. Municipal bodies have argued that this financial hike is necessary to maintain drinking water schemes, expand infrastructure and ensure smooth functioning of the water supply system. The department is currently conducting a detailed evaluation of the data submitted by all 30 civic bodies.
Final Proposal to Follow State-Level Approval
Once the assessment is complete, the Urban Development Department will prepare a final proposal for the fee revision, with a notification implementing the new rates to be issued only after state-level approval. If the proposal is passed, the revised water connection rates will be applied across all 49 urban local bodies in the state, directly impacting the pockets of ordinary citizens.
