Jamshedpur: Former IPS officer Ajay Kumar, who once served as SP of Jamshedpur, has strongly criticised the local police over a recent lathicharge on youths, calling the visuals disturbing and describing the police’s conduct as “brutal” and “inhuman.”
Kumar Recalls His Own Tenure, Known for Cracking Down on Crime
Ajay Kumar, now a Congress leader and a former MP from the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituency, is remembered for his tenure as SP during which he had cracked down heavily on organised crime and mafia networks in the city. He later took voluntary retirement, moved into the corporate sector, and subsequently entered politics.
“Uniform Should Inspire Safety, Not Fear,” Says Kumar
Expressing his anguish on X, Kumar wrote that as a former IPS officer, he has always believed that the role of the uniform is to instil a sense of security among the public, not fear through the use of force. He said that crime control and maintenance of law and order require professional methods and due legal process, not the public and brutal beating of ordinary citizens on the streets. He urged the police administration to take immediate cognisance of the incident and initiate strict disciplinary action against the officer responsible, adding that policing must be about earning public trust rather than instilling fear.
