Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani tendered his resignation to Governor Acharya Devvrat on Saturday ahead of an assembly election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state early next year.
After submitting his resignation, Rupani told reporters he is thankful to the BJP leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve as the chief minister.
Rupani said his resignation is in accordance with the “BJP’s tradition” of providing all party workers an equal opportunity.
“I was given the opportunity to serve the state for five years. I will further do whatever is asked by my party,” Rupani said, adding that he is committed to the leadership of PM Modi.
Rupani took the state’s Chief Ministerial position on 7 August, 2016, and is representing Rajkot West in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
