Ranchi, Oct.9: The impact of a coal scarcity in Jharkhand for the last several days is now being felt across the country. Due to this crisis, electricity generation has decreased. As a result, numerous states in the country are experiencing power outages. Many states are able to provide power for just 8 to 10 hours every day. In Jharkhand, load shedding of 285 MW to 430 MW has been implemented due to the coal shortfall. Notably, Jharkhand’s electricity consumption is approximately 2200 MW. A maximum of 500 MW power is produced in the state. The central pool is used to meet the remainder of the demand. DVC and NTPC units supply electricity here. It is being said that the power crisis may deepen during the festive season.

KK Verma, Director (Operation) of Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam and MD of Jharkhand Urja Transmission Nigam, has said that at present, the situation is bad in the whole country regarding electricity. It is a state of national calamity. For the next seven days, there could be a power outage. He claimed that due to excessive rain this year, several coal mines had been flooded resulting in this nationwide crisis.

The impact of Jharkhand’s coal crisis is evident in Bihar too. Even after the Bihar government is paying five times more than usual price, electricity firms are unable to supply enough electricity in the state. According to the Energy Development Corporation, the central pool provides very little electricity in response to state demand. In India, there is a shortfall of roughly 10,000 megawatts (MW) of power. Because of the electrical deficit, the National Power Exchange’s electricity per unit rate has increased. Electricity, which was formerly available for Rs 5 per unit, is now available for Rs 20 per unit.
