Amritsar, Oct.27: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has demanded on Wednesday that the three new farm laws be repealed by the Centre by November 8, or the state government will repeal them in a special session.

“On November 8, the Punjab government has decided to hold a special session of the Legislative Assembly. We demand that the Centre repeal farm legislation by November 8 or we will repeal them at the November 8 special session,” Channi remarked.

“We also demand that the Centre withdraw the notification mentioning the expansion of the BSF range from 15 to 50 kilometres, or we will be obliged to eliminate it by November 8. This will have an impact on the relationship between the Centre and the state,” he added.

Former Punjab minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi recently urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the contentious farm rules so that farmers can return to their homes before the severe winter arrives, noting that hundreds of them have perished during their agitation.

Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been camped at the Delhi border since November 26 last year, asking that the three new farm rules be repealed.

“For over a year, farmers have been protesting across the country. Farmers have stood unified and determined to have their views heard, but there have also been hundreds of farmers who have died fighting for their rights,” the Congress MLA remarked.

He added that it is regrettable that the protesting farmers continue to live in deplorable conditions, without basic necessities like sanitation and safe drinking water.
